Qualicum Beach has made a point of keeping its trees. The town owns a large share of its own land as parks and green space, and the Heritage Forest near the centre still holds coastal Douglas fir that is centuries old. That is a large part of the town’s character. It also means a lot of roofs sit under heavy canopy, and those gutters fill faster than most.

Once roots are in a gutter, a garden hose will not shift them. We pull them out by hand, scrape the trough clean and run water down each downspout to make sure it drains.

Winter brings almost all of the rain
Somewhere between 80 and 85 per cent of Qualicum Beach’s yearly precipitation falls from October through April. The town gets a dry summer and then months of steady rain off the mountain behind it. Our gutters are original to the house. How can we tell if they are past cleaning?
Stand back and look along each run. A trough that dips between hangers, a seam with a rust stain or white chalky streak running down from it, or water still sitting in the gutter a day after the rain has stopped all point to a gutter that has lost its fall or started to split. Cleaning will not fix any of those; the run needs a repair or a new section.
Can you handle the gutters for my parent's house if I live elsewhere?

How often should we clean gutters under tall fir trees?
Under a heavy canopy, twice a year is the usual minimum: once in early fall and again in spring, plus a late-fall pass where maples hang over the roof. Some houses right under big firs need a third look. After the first visit we can tell you which group yours is in.
Do you also clean moss and stains off the roof edge or siding?
Gutters are our main work. We also do soft washing and pressure washing, so if the siding or a path below the gutters needs attention, ask about it when you request your gutter quote.
