Errington is farmland and forest south-west of Parksville, close to Englishman River Falls Provincial Park, and it is about as rural as our service area gets. Houses sit well back from the road, shops and barns stand beside them, and tall trees often rise on three sides of a building. Gutters here take more abuse than a town gutter does, and they tend to need fixing as well as cleaning.

Out here the hardware is where problems show up first: the length of the runs, the number of outlets and the fixings that hold it all up.

Long runs, too few outlets

A workshop or barn can have a gutter twenty or thirty metres long with a single downspout at each end. Water in the middle of that run has a long way to travel, and any low spot along the way holds a puddle. Add a season of needles and the middle overflows while both ends stay dry.

After we clean a long run, we flush it from the far end and watch where the water slows down or stands. A run that has lost its fall can be rehung so it drains to the outlets. If one stretch is simply too long for its downspouts, we will tell you, and adding another outlet is a job our gutter repair service covers.

The weight problem

Wet needles, cedar fronds and moss are heavy, and a gutter full of them is carrying a lot more than it was built for. Over a winter or two, that load pulls hangers out of the fascia, opens up seams and bends the front edge down. Once a gutter sags, it holds water, which adds more weight and grows more moss. Regular cleaning breaks that cycle before the hardware fails. Cold snaps make it worse: inland and away from the water, a gutter full of wet debris can freeze solid, and ice weighs more again.

When we are on the ladder, we check each hanger as we pass it. Loose ones get re-secured on the spot if you want, and we tell you about any fascia board that feels soft under the gutter.

Metal roofs on outbuildings

Many shops and barns in the area have metal roofs. Anything that lands on smooth metal, whether snow, ice or a fallen branch, tends to slide off in one go and hit the gutter on its way down. A gutter below a metal roof gets bent more often than one below shingles. We look at those runs closely and can straighten or replace a damaged section.

Guards for houses in the trees

On a house surrounded by conifers, gutter guards save a lot of ladder work. The type matters here. Fine mesh stops needles; coarse screens and foam inserts let them in or trap them. We fit guards only after the gutter is fully clean and flushed, so nothing is sealed in underneath.

Got questions?

Errington gutter questions

The gutter on our shop sags in the middle. Does it need cleaning or repair?

Often both. A sag usually starts with a run full of wet debris pulling on its hangers. We clean it first, because the gutter has to be empty to see what is wrong. Then we can rehang it with the right fall toward the outlet, or quote the repair if you want to think it over.

Do gutter guards work under fir and cedar?

A fine mesh does. Coarse foam or wide screens let needles straight through and can trap them. Even the right guard needs an occasional rinse, because needles sit on top of the mesh. Guards reduce how often a full clean is needed. They do not make a gutter maintenance-free.

Can you clean gutters on a building with a metal roof?

Yes. We set ladders and work from the gutter edge rather than walking on smooth metal panels, and we check the gutter's hangers while we are there, since snow and branches sliding off metal put more strain on them than they do on a shingle roof.

What happens to everything you clear out?

It is bagged up as we go and taken away with us. Nothing gets left in a pile by the barn or tipped into the garden.

Is Errington part of your regular service area?

Yes, along with Coombs, Parksville and Nanoose Bay. Send the address and tell us how many buildings have gutters, and the quote is free.
