Longer runs, further from the house
Where a house has room around it, downspouts tend to empty onto splash blocks, into gravel or along a short pipe out across the lawn rather than into a city storm main. That works, as long as what comes down the downspout is water. Send it a slurry of fir needles and the outlet clogs, the water finds a new path, and it often finds the foundation. Our lawn is soft in the fall. Is that a problem for the ladder?
It can be, and it is something we check before we climb, not after. On soft ground we spread the load under the ladder feet or pick a firmer spot. Where neither works safely, we say so and talk through another way to reach that run.
