Cedar begins where Nanaimo’s south end gives way to fields and forest, and it is close enough that our crew treats it as part of the home patch. Properties run from homes on ordinary lots near the village, to acreage around Yellow Point, to houses along the shoreline at Cedar-by-the-Sea. What almost all of them share is trees, and a lot of them.

The trees do most of the work against you

Douglas fir and western red cedar are the main load here, with bigleaf maple mixed in. They behave differently in a gutter. Maple leaves arrive in one heavy fall drop and sit loosely on top. Fir needles and cedar fronds come down all year, small and steady, and they sink. By the time anyone notices a problem, the bottom of the trough holds a packed, wet layer that grows moss and sprouts seedlings.

That layer is why a quick scoop off the top is not a clean. We dig the mat out by hand along the whole run, then flush to make sure the water actually reaches the outlet.

More than one roof to think about

A Cedar acreage often has a house, a detached garage, a workshop and maybe a carport or a barn, and each roof with a gutter needs the same care. The outbuilding gutters are the ones that get forgotten. They fill up for years, overflow at the corners, and slowly rot the wood they hang on.

When you ask for a quote, list every building with a gutter on it. We price the whole property together and clear them all on one visit. If a shop gutter has sagged or split from years of neglect, gutter repair can be done at the same time.

Where the water ends up on a rural lot

Few downspouts out here run into a town storm drain. Most let out onto the ground, into a ditch, or into a buried pipe that runs off across the property, and some feed a rain barrel or a cistern. After cleaning, we flush every downspout and watch where the water goes. A pipe that backs up at ground level means a blockage underground, and we will tell you where we found it. Digging out or clearing a buried line is a separate job for a drainage contractor.

If you collect rainwater, see the FAQ below before we arrive.

Homes on the water

Houses on the shoreline at Cedar-by-the-Sea take wind straight off the water. It drives rain against the fascia and pushes leaves and twigs into gutters from angles a sheltered house never sees. Salt air also works on metal over time, so on waterfront homes we look at the hangers and screws while we are up there and point out any that are rusting through.

Guards for heavy tree cover

On a lot surrounded by conifers, gutter guards are worth a conversation. A fine mesh keeps needles out of the downspout and cuts how often the gutter needs a full clean. It does not end the work entirely; needles still collect on top and need a rinse now and then.

We are insured and WCB-registered, bring 10+ years on Vancouver Island rooflines, and work weekdays. Every bag of debris goes away with us.

Got questions?

Cedar gutter cleaning questions

We are on acreage with a long gravel driveway. Can your truck get in?

Almost always. Tell us about any gate, a tight turn or a soft section of driveway when you ask for a quote, and whether there is somewhere to park near the house. If it is easier to walk the ladders in from the road, we do that.

We collect rainwater off the roof. Should we do anything before you come?

Let us know when you book. Flushing a gutter sends a rush of dirty water and fine debris down the downspout, and you may want the tank inlet diverted or a first-flush filter checked before and after. We clean the gutters and downspouts; we do not clean or service the tank itself.

How often do gutters under big cedar and fir trees need cleaning?

Usually twice a year: once in late fall after the deciduous leaves are down, and again in spring to take out the needles and fronds that came down over winter. A house in the open with only a few trees nearby can often go a full year between visits.

Is Cassidy or South Wellington too far out for you?

No. Both are inside our service area, along with the rest of Cedar, Yellow Point and Cedar-by-the-Sea. The quote is free wherever you are on that side of Nanaimo.
