Island Gutter Cleaners, Now in Nanaimo

Nanaimo Gutter Cleaning is a small crew with a narrow trade. We empty gutters, flush downspouts, fix the runs that need fixing and fit guards where they make sense.

Our first decade of it was spent on other Vancouver Island rooflines.

Most of that time was on the south end of the Island. Nanaimo and the coast either side of it are now part of the route, and the crew, ladders and habits came north unchanged.

What mid-Island trees leave in a gutter

This stretch of coast sits in the Coastal Douglas-fir zone, and it shows on the roofs.

Fir and western red cedar shed needles and fronds that knit into a wet mat. Bigleaf maple adds broad leaves and seed keys each fall. Arbutus near the water drops bark and leaves in summer, so those gutters fill while everything else is dry.

Summers are dry enough that nobody looks up. Then the rain arrives in October and keeps coming through April, and whatever sat in the trough all summer meets all of it at once.

Waterfront homes along the Strait take wind-driven rain off the water. Hillside lots in Ladysmith have tall downhill walls. Rural places in Cedar and Errington have a shop as well.

So we look at each property before we decide how to set up on it.

We report what the ladder shows us

Getting the debris out comes first.

Up at the eave, we also get a view of the system that nobody on the lawn has.

• Spikes or hangers backing out of the fascia.
• An end cap or seam that weeps.
• A sag where water sits after the flush.
• A downspout whose underground line will not take water.
• Moss creeping under the bottom row of shingles.
• Soft fascia board behind the trough.

If we find one of those, you get told what we found and where it is.

What to do about it is your call. Some of it is worth fixing now, a lot of it can sit for a season, and we will say which is which.

Where the price comes from

There is no single rate. A rancher with an open yard in Parksville and a three-level house under cedars near Westwood Lake take very different amounts of time.

We look at:

• The total length of gutter
• The height of the eaves
• Which trees hang over the roof, and how packed the runs are
• How easy it is to set a ladder on each side
• Garages, workshops or barns you want added
